Book Recommendations (From My Past Self) - June 2021

Editor's Note: I found this post in the drafts from June of 2021, kind of unfinished, but I figured it would be worth posting anyway-- hope this is enjoyable!

Have you been looking for reads to indulge in this month? If so, you're in luck! Here are five books I've read recently that I think you will love. Read on to learn more, and why not give them a try?

Colin Jost, writer of memoir A Very Punchable Face, is pictured with his wife Scarlett Johansson (maybe you've heard of her...)

1. A Very Punchable Face by Colin Jost

This is, by far, the funniest memoir I've ever read. Impressively, this book is also touching, insightful, and fascinating. It'll definitely have you laughing while keeping you turning the page again and again. Light-hearted at times, layered, and interesting, I think this book is a total score for anyone looking for a hilarious memoir about a Harvard graduate from Staten Island who now works at SNL. Colin tells the riveting and sometimes embarrassing life story of a very white guy with a very punchable face, and it's an absolute delight to read. I hope you guys give this entertaining book a try and that you enjoy it as much as I did!

The book talks about things such as: Staten Island, Speech & Debate, swimming, SNL, firefighters, falling asleep in a cemetery, and Harvard.

For every accomplishment (hosting the Emmys), there is a setback (hosting the Emmys). And for every absurd moment (watching paramedics give CPR to a raccoon), there is an honest, emotional one (recounting his mother’s experience on the scene of the Twin Towers’ collapse on 9/11). Told with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, A Very Punchable Face reveals the brilliant mind behind some of the dumbest sketches on television, and lays bare the heart and humor of a hardworking guy—with a face you can’t help but want to punch. 2. One To Watch by Kate Stayman-London

Reading this book was like watching a reality dating show but even better. Bea is a plus-size fashion blogger who's swept into an opportunity of a lifetime- to be the star of a reality dating show, and have One To Watch also did that impressive thing of making you really think each of the finalists deserved to win, and made it impossible for me as a reader to choose who Bea should eliminate at the end of the week! The book was full of show twists, dramatic events, and engaging forms of media that made me want to keep reading. Overall, I totally recommend this book as a fun read but still tackling lots of deeper issues!

Star rating: 4/5

3. The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Thrilling, suspenseful, and beautifully crafted. I recommend this book if you're in the mood for some scary and entertaining fiction.

Star rating: 5/5

4. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor J. Reid

LOVED this book (and so does BookTok.) The book is told with an engaging narrative and the plot, characters, and setting are all phenomenal. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested

Star rating: 5/5

5. Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales

Very cute and very worth the read! This is a classic boy-meets-boy romance that has a satisfying ending. I recommend this if you're looking for something teenager-y and romantic.
